A Desert In The Ocean

by David Adam

“In a series of meditations and exercises based on the poem attributed to St. Brendan the navigator, David Adam invites us to consider whether God is calling us to live more adventurously, to extend ourselves, to seek new horizons.” Each chapter ends with the author’s favourite ‘5P’ exercises which I find so helpful, and time given to these, mean you get so much more from the book. David Adam weaves into this book, all that is known of St. Brendan, and includes stories and writings of other celtic saints. We are taught that the desert is a place of renunciation of the trivial things in life, not a hiding place but a place where all things are revealed in a constant relationship with the ever present God.

Dewi Sant - Saint David

- Patron of Wales

by J B Midgley

Barry Midgley gives us a clear and simple account, from a Catholic perspective, of the life and achievements of Saint David, Patron of Wales, who died in 589 AD (or possibly 604). After briefly discussing the nature of patriotism, which he carefully distinguishes from any kind of exaggerated nationalism, Midgley puts the life of Saint David into the context of evangelisation in Europe, and Celtic spirituality in the 5th and 6th centuries. Among other things, we read of his establishment of St Andrew's Monastery, on the site of what is now St David's Cathedral. It was only after his death that the name of the monastery was changed to Saint David's. Midgley records David's consecration as Archbishop, though comments that this may have been simply an honorary title. Nonetheless, there is no doubting the reverence with which David was viewed, a mark of which was the devotional cult that came to surround him. I sensed, on the part of Barry Midgley himself, real warmth for his subject, and his little book is informative and helpful.

Dictionary of Christian Biography

by Michael Walsh

This is an important work. Some of the people included could be found in a dictionary of saints, but many more, of all generations, denominations, and from all around the world, were unknown to me, and well worth learning about. An excellent reference book, and there is much to be gained by dipping into this incredible record of Christian faithfulness.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

- Reality and Resistance

by Larry Rasmussen

Rasmussen’s treatment of Bonhoeffer focuses on his resistance of Nazism and in particular his involvement in the attempt on Hitler’s life. This is a straightforward re-publication of the 1972 edition of the book, for the 50th anniversary of Bonhoeffer’s death in 2005. Rasmussen presents a careful and detailed examination of the complex ethical issues relating to resistance and tyrannicide. This is an important contribution to the appreciation of Bonhoeffer, whom some at least are inclined to see as a political activist rather than Christian minister, because of his involvement in the resistance to Hitler and the Nazi regime. Rasmussen himself acknowledges that much has come to light in the period since the original publication, however this has not led him to update his conclusions, with which he remains content. Certainly a book for consideration by anyone wishing to engage with Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Dimitri's Cross

- The Life and Letters of St. Dimitri Klepinin, Martyred During the Holocaust

by Hèléne Arjakovsky-Klepinine

The holiness that we see presented in the lives of the saints can be rather forbidding and paradoxically even discouraging for those who are still trudging along the way of discipleship. What shines through this account of St Dimitri is both an endearing humanity and a faith which concentrates simply but with utter conviction on the love of Christ. His daughter writes with feeling but not sentimentality, allowing her memories and St Dimitri’s own letters to his wife to speak for themselves. The book helps us to understand a little better the making of a saint but it also, incidentally, offers an interesting side light into the beginnings of Orthodox involvement in the Ecumenical movement.

Discovering Saint Patrick

by Thomas O’Loughlin

This book is described as a "popular history" of Patrick, but it is written by a scholar in historical theology and is extremely thorough. The first part of the book contains some thought provoking insights into the medieval mind set concerning saints and miracles and why as modern christians such things still fascinate us. The life and legend of Patrick is not nearly so straightforward as we had thought, indeed he "disappeared" from view for about 200 years. Bede's thorough History of the English Church and People makes no mention of him. The second part of the book consists of translations of the source texts concerning Patrick. This volume contains valuable material for those interested in the history of the "Dark Ages" as well as those who wish to know more about Patrick.
