The Beauty of Holiness

The Caroline Divines and Their Writings

by Benjamin Guyer

Price: £19.99
Publisher:Canterbury Press imprint of Hymns Ancient & Modern Ltd
Published:29 February 2012
From the quality of their works, one could be forgiven for thinking that the Caroline Divines lived in a golden age for the Church of England. The age was in fact one of extreme peril, difficulty and division for the Church. This anthology gives a flavour of the riches and diversity of Anglican writing in the mid-seventeenth century, and will supply surprises and discoveries for the enquirer. The authorís organisation of extracts is a stimulating one, covering in part the history of the times, liturgical developments and progress in ethical thought (an especially important fruit of the Carolineís endeavours) amongst many other topics.
