J I Packer who is a Professor of Theology at Regent College, Vancouver, puts forward in his new book Taking God Seriously, that catechesis is vital for teaching and understanding Christianity. Catechesis defines the orderly instruction in the truths by which Christians are called to live. The author claims that this intentional and orderly instruction has largely fallen out of use in recent days and its use should once again become a vital part of Christian teaching. Packer claims that there are many ways of catechising but whichever form is used, be it one-to-one, or group discussion and question and answer sessions, the Bible calls it simply teaching or discipling. Without it Christians are undernourished and spiritually sluggish. By examining various aspects of Christianity, Christian Unity, Repentance, The Church, Baptism and the Lord's Supper, and posing questions at the end of each chapter, the author hopes that his work will ground Christians more firmly in their faith and stir them out of their sluggishness.
