Creatures Great And Small
by Jann Godfrey
Publisher:Barnabas imprint of BRF
This is a slightly novel take on a children's collection of best known bible stories. Rather than taking the common approach of simply going through a selection of the most popular, well known stories this book focuses on those with animals in them, hence the title of the book, ‘creatures great and small'.
The animal theme provides a fresh emphasis on familiar stories—the cock crowing when Peter denies knowing Jesus is described in far more detail than the crucifixion, for example. It also means that some stories are included that are not often found in other books of this type (the plagues in Egypt and the ravens bringing food to Elijah). The animal theme does limit the length of the book slightly however—there are only twelve short stories in the book. The stories are well told and nicely illustrated and this book would certainly be a good addition to a child's bookshelf—not perhaps as the only book of this type, but a good alternative option when choosing which book to read.
