Winning The War Of The Wagging Tongue
by Matthew C Mitchell
Gossip is hardly a new phenomenon, but in the wake of the ‘communication revolution’ it has never been so easy or so seductive, promoted by the media as a normal, and indeed healthy, pastime though they roundly condemn the ‘Twitter Trolls’ who are the logical end-result.
Few Christians would deny the inherent destructiveness of gossip, yet it infests many congregations and Matthew Mitchel undertakes in this book to identify the danger signs and provide tools both for dealing with it in our everyday lives and changing the culture within our churches.
I was surprised to find out how much the Bible has to say on the matter and how much practical advice it offers. The author puts this into its modern context and gives anonymised examples, along with Group Discussion Questions and an extra chapter especially for church leaders. I found it very balanced and readable, not ‘preachy’ in any way; direct and to-the-point, and without any spurious quick fixes. Mathew admits that he has yet to find a one-size-fits-all approach; “…life is messier than that,” he says, “and God’s wisdom is better than that too.” Recommended.
