Review:

Do you want to be made whole?

In today’s society when people have a problem—be it physical, emotional, mental or spiritual—we treat the symptoms. This book encourages us to find out the root cause of the problem and deal with that.

The author has the experience of working as a marriage and family therapist and he writes in a very accessible style, with a lot of personal information shared from his own life.

The book is in three parts: ‘Encountering Jesus’, ‘Facing our brokenness’ and ‘Healing our wounds’. Through these sections the process of healing is clearly outlined, backed up by the personal stories and with the use of clear and memorable charts and diagrams. The ‘Take a moment’ sections encourage the reader to apply the process to their own situation.

The author is a Catholic but his approach is first Christian and then Catholic. The book is thoroughly Bible based and also includes interesting insights from Catholic Church tradition—for example his treatment of the seven deadly sins and also the chapter on ‘Sacraments and healing’. Although I am not a Catholic myself, I found these parts of the book very thought provoking and felt that I could take them on board for myself.

In the Introduction, the author recommends reading the book twice, once to gain an overview and the second time, more slowly, praying it through. Having read it once, I definitely want to make time to read it again. I think all kinds of people could find this book very helpful and I would definitely recommend it.
