Review:
Mitch Albom’s imagination has taken him into the realms of ‘What if?’ What if you could meet with someone who has died and come to a different understanding of their life in relation to your own? Charley Benetto, known as Chick, has reached rock bottom in his life and wants to end it. He is not sure whether he is dead or alive when he finds himself at his Mother’s old home to be greeted by his Mother who seems very much alive. He agrees to spend the day with her – he can do no other! Cleverly, by the interaction of these two main characters, the story of their lives emerges, helped by ‘papers’ found among Chick’s possessions when he is finally dead. This didn’t take long to read, but I was intrigued and it certainly got my own imagination going.

Reader review: - Mike Topliss' review of previous Hardback.

In the television series “A Bit of a Do” one of the characters keens over her collapsed father: “Dad, you can’t be dead. I haven’t told you that I love you.” If you take that thought, together with the theory that when suddenly you know you’re about to die, scenes from your whole life flash by, you have the ingredients for Mitch Albom’s new book. The recipe of course is his, and the book is a short, kaleidoscopic account of both recalled and unremembered incidents that could have happened differently, or been better understood…if only. So, has the main character actually got the unique opportunity to put things right? It is a poignant read, and it inevitably sets the reader off on his or her own moving reminiscences. It is not a religious book. But it’s Christian. It ties in with His purpose as recorded in John 10.10. And, come to think of it, an enterprising preacher could use Mitch Albom’s inventive line to give Lazarus a voice.
