Mercy Within Mercy

George's And Pauline Vanier and the Search for God

by Mary Frances Coady

This book gave a fascinating insight into the spiritual life of Georges and Pauline Vanier, the parents of Jean Vanier, the co-founder of the L'Arche communities. It consists mainly of excerpts from letters and journals. Georges and Pauline had high profile lives, especially during his years as Governor General of Canada, and yet undergirding all that they did was a humble and sincere walk with God. I found some of the most moving passages towards the end of the book when Pauline, now a widow, learns deep lessons while being part of the original L'Arche community, at Trosly in France.
