The Church Of Mercy
by Pope Francis (ed. Giuliano Vigini)
Publisher:DLT (Darton, Longman and Todd Ltd)
The first official book out from Pope Francis is a brilliantly edited work that clarifies, consolidates and illuminates his views on The Church, the poor, mission, evangelism, social justice and injustice, and so many more things that we have come to understand that he has a heart for and a willingness to speak out on.
This book reflects those words we have heard in his homilies, and had reported on from his meetings, and encapsulates them in a brilliantly easy to read and understand book.
You can't help but hear Pope Francis voice in this work, it reads as he speaks, warmly, insightfully, keenly and yes passionately.
This is not a book for Catholics only, and I can also imagine few Catholics who would not want to read it, but it is a book for anyone with a passion for justice and a desire to see the word of Christ not only shared and spread, but actively lived out in deed as well as principle.
This book alone, of course, is not going to achieve that, but it is a start on a journey, a good companion to have on that journey. It is a conversation starter that asks questions, points out ways we could go, and highlights things we should perhaps already have seen but have missed.
A thoroughly wonderful first official book from Pope Francis that is not at all beyond the reach or understanding of anyone.
