The First Easterby Lois Rock This is not a new book as such but it is a new hardback edition of a popular book by Lois Rock with illustrations by Sophie Allsopp. The story of Holy Week, Easter and then Pentecost and the disciples setting forth to spread the Good News, follows true to the story told in the Gospels. The lovely, but serious looking, watercolour illustrations really suit the story and add weight to the telling. This is a lovely and sensitive Easter book and at the price a very good buy too. The Story Of Easterby Fiona Boon A lovely new edition to the Easter market for little children and toddlers, a small padded-jacket board-book with a carrying handle. Inside the pages are a bit frenetic but in a wonderfully fun way with busy pencil drawn style characters and collage style fabric pattern backgrounds. The words are done in a curve with some words emphasised in bold in a way that almost makes you sing them out. Lovely and fun with a hint of the serious but not sombre makes this totally appropriate for a tiny audience. Review by Melanie Carroll (02/02/13) |

Easter Sticker Bookby Karen Williamson I love the format of this little Easter sticker book, it so takes me back to primary school days! It's one of those books where the picture takes up much of the page and the words are on a white band in beautifully clear black print across the bottom. Lovely for children just learning to read alone. The stickers that come with the book are easy to place for young children too because they fit over the faded image in the pictures. Altogether a great little book. Review by Melanie Carroll (02/02/13) |

Ten Minute Easter Activity Bookby Bethan James & Heather Stewart A colourful activity book for the 7+ age group. Each 'activity set' has a story component, and then word and logic puzzles (estimated to take about 10 minutes) for the children to have fun doing. Although called an Easter activity book it goes well past the Lent and Easter stories into Ascension and material from Acts. In all there are 22 activity sets / stories in the book and it would be great for keeping children amused and informed about Lent and Easter. And at 10 minutes or thereabouts, just right for giving them during a sermon, or even for using during a series of Sunday school sessions. Review by Melanie Carroll (02/02/13) |

Busy Bees Easter- Activity Book with Stickersby Jocelyn Miller Fantastic Easter fun and crafts with this activity book. Yes it has stickers, and some pages with a religious look and theme, but mostly this book is an action filled craft time book that would do for any group of children regardless of churchmanship or none! Easter eggs galore and fun, Easter egg bunting, Easter egg baskets, spring flower cards, Easter bunnies and carrot boxes to make - it's a great craft filled book and would be a good book for any children's group or pack leader, or parent looking for some ideas and things to do in the run up to Easter. Discovering the Hidden Lamb- Faith Finders seriesby Gill Jacobs It's a story about a young boy, his friends and family, a bright and intelligent boy from a low class shepherding family but who does well in school apart from some mild bullying from upper class children. It's also a gentle story that introduces us to Jesus the Good Shepherd and storyteller and ultimately the Passover sacrifice offered for all people. The way the author blends the timelines, making it seem somehow quite modern whilst trying to put it in the time of Jesus, should make it accessible for young readers to better understand and relate to Ben as he comes to the realisation of who Jesus really is. Though grown up readers may find it to be a bit disconcerting and the suddenness of the ending a bit jarring, however I think a younger audience will find it just fine. A fantastic book to be used by young readers as a bed time book or and with 33 chapters there is a rhythm to it that sits well in that lead up. Review by Melanie Carroll (20/06/12) |

My Carry-Along Easter- Activity book With StickersCrafts by Jocelyn Miller, illustrations by Cathy Hughes Ideal for children as young as three, so long as they have adult help. The stickers are for using as the child chooses on the various craft ideas from Easter cards, Easter basket and Easter bunnies and Easter chicks among others. Suitable to do wherever you are – so long as the adult is prepared with the materials which are clearly stated on each page. Barely a mention of Jesus and what Easter is all about, but a fun book nevertheless. Review by Mary Bartholomew (21/03/12) |

The Easter Storyretold by Juliet David This brightly illustrated Candle Bible story will appeal to younger children (3-7yr olds). The story begins with Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey and leads you through the events of the crucifixion and resurrection, ending with Jesus' ascension into heaven. The older children in the age bracket will enjoy following the map in the middle of the book which shows where Jesus went while he was in Jerusalem. Personally, I wasn't too sure about the picture of the female angels (one dressed in pink!) but the story and illustrations are engaging and enjoyable and will help younger children learn all about the Easter story. (If it leads you to check in the Bible for accuracy then so much the better!) This book would make a lovely alternative to an Easter egg and will probably cost you less too! It makes welcome change to find an accessible Easter story for children amongst the huge number of Christmas stories available! Review by Kathy Bland (14/03/12) |

VeggieTales: ‘Twas the Night Before EasterCreated by Phil Vischer & Mike Nawrocki Larry Cucumber is excited about chocolate eggs and jelly beans and other Easter treats, so Bob Tomato talks about the real lesson to be learnt at Eastertide and presents a story to explain what he means with all the usual vegetable characters. Marlee Meade a reporter in Crisper County thinks she is helping others by re-opening a run-down theatre and putting on a show, but it goes spectacularly wrong and the only reason the audience come is to hear Cassie Cassava sing; and the only reason Cassie Cassava is there is because she has been tricked! When Marlee realises her mistake and she and her friends try to get to the sun-rise service Easter morning, they have an unexpectedly exciting journey as their bus is pulled through the deep snow by the robot rabbit from Marlee’s show. (I loved this part and watched it over again!) Marlee learns that you don’t need to put on an impressive show to help people, just help them with whatever they need. As Tim says, the important thing is ‘Remembering what Jesus did for us and trying to be like him’. My grandson spotted the DVD on my desk and immediately asked to watch it; he’s IT savvy and watched the various bonus pieces too. Veggietales are always a hit with youngsters of all ages. Simon and the Easter Miracle- A Traditional Tale for EasterRetold by Mary J. Joslin illustrated by Anna Luraschi A traditional folktale based on the Biblical telling of Simon of Cyrene who was forced by Roman Soldiers to carry the cross of Jesus. The story is told in an interesting narrative that spurs the turning of the pages. One tiny bit of the tale jarred for me and that was the one time Jesus spoke and gave a reply to Simon’s question. I was left thinking ‘Would Jesus have used those words? Anyhow later when the story opened up more, a connection to what He had said became apparent. I enjoyed the colours and style of the illustrations. A book to be enjoyed as many times as it is picked again from the book shelf. Review by Ruthie Thomas (21/02/11) |

The Three Trees- A Traditional FolktaleRetold by Elena Pasquali, illustrated by Sophie Windham The Three Treesis a colourful, eye catching book retelling a traditional folk tale that embraces the Easter Story. The tale tells of three trees on a hillside and of the dreams they have for the things they would do. The dreams come true but not in the ways expected and each of their rough timber ends up playing a part in the life and death of Jesus. A delightful story. Review by Ruthie Thomas (21/02/11) |

My Very First Easter Story Sticker bookby Lois Rock illustrated by Alex Ayliffe My Very First Easter Story Sticker Book carries a brightly coloured and child friendly cover and the inside pages offer more of the same. The stickers are accessed from the middle of the book and the places where they fit are shown as plain coloured shapes in order to simplify the finding process. The Easter story is told simply for accessibility of the intended age group. And the inclusion of a question at the bottom of the core pages of the book allows the reader to reflect generally within their every day frame of reference. The back pages of the book give an outline of the life of Jesus in words and pictures. Finally, the last page gives a feel good prayer for Easter in rhyming verse. On Easter Day in the Morningby Vickie Howie and Honor Ayres I wish I had this book when my children and grandchildren were young! One of the very best I have seen for this age group. Repeated phrases such as pit-pat, pit-pat or left-right left-right, make this book a joy to read to a little one and they will, soon be joining in. The story starts with Jesus preaching and teaching and meeting with the little children, then moves on to the crucifixion which is not glossed over, but handled gently and sensitively before bursting into the joy of Easter and the resurrection. Aided by the illustrations, this is an excellent re-telling and highly recommended. Review by Mary Bartholomew (18/02/11) |

My Very First Easter StoryWords by Lois Rock, Pictures by Alex Ayliffe Lois Rock tells the story from Jesus and his disciples approaching Jerusalem at the start of what we now know as Holy Week, through to Pentecost and the spreading of the Gospel worldwide: she manages this in very simple language that a young child can easily follow, accompanied by equally simple but expressive illustrations. With it’s presentation page in the front it would make a better Easter gift for a young child than an Easter egg, or perhaps in addition, I like chocolate too. Review by Mary Bartholomew (01/02/10) |

The Angel and the Dove- A Story for Easterby Sophie Piper, illustrations by Kristina Stephenson A charming way to introduce 3-5 year olds to the idea of the resurrection. A little angel in a garden talks to a nesting dove. The angel and the dove are watching out for the signs of the coming spring; flowers opening, butterflies emerging into the sunshine, all is happy and bright. Then one day all becomes sad and gloomy, a woman is crying, and the angel and the dove wait, and wait, until all is joyful again. The dove’s eggs hatch, the woman is laughing and yes! Jesus is alive again! Review by Mary Bartholomew (19/02/09) |

Bible Codecrackers: Easter- Puzzle Bookby Elizabeth Leese The latest in the Bible Codecrackers series, this little book, will keep a youngster busy for hours! Packed with things to do and all the while learning more about Jesus and the story of Easter in particular. Really imaginative activities, not just the usual crosswords and wordsearches, there are things to do here that are certainly new to me. Plenty to read too, they will need a Bible to refer to, and before they begin should read the ‘Advice for all codecrackers’ at the beginning. Review by Mary Bartholomew (19/02/09) |

The Easter Angelsby Bob Hartnman, illustrated by Sophy Williams Now this is different! This is the story of the two angels at the tomb of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. A Guardian Angel who had watched Jesus death on the cross and longed to save him, the other a shadow of an angel, the Angel of Death, was fearful that he had to bring death to someone else; though very aware of the suffering the loss of anyone can be to their families and friends. To their surprise their mission was one of joy. One was to roll away the stone at the entrance to the tomb, the other to tell the approaching women the news of the resurrection of Jesus. Sensitively told and illustrated, this story particularly appealed to me. Review by Mary Bartholomew (19/02/09) |

The Easter Story- Candle Read and Shareby Retold by Gwen Ellis, illustrations by Steve Smallman As each part of the story is told, with its relevant Bible verses to refer to, a question is asked at the foot of the page to make sure the young person has understood what has been read. The story is told from Palm Sunday to the Ascension, expressively illustrated and simply told but with a surprising amount of detail. I particularly liked this retelling and highly recommend it.
