Review:
Following on from The Centurionís Wife Alban the Roman soldier and Leah ward of Pontius Pilate are married at a gathering of the believers of the Way but trouble is brewing for the followers of Jesus, who they believe to be the risen messiah long awaited by the Judeans. This story centres around Abigail and her brother Jacob. Abigail a close friend of Leahís, Jacob found and adopted by Alban and now restored to his sister.
Albanís centurion friend Linus sees Abigail and desires her for his wife, as does an older Judean merchant seeking a mother for his children. Abigail has no wish to be married to either but as the story unfolds and the tensions around the believers increases you get a strong sense of what life at that time must have been like. Abigail works long hours under the supervision of Martha, caring for the poor, the widows and orphans as their Lord and Master taught them. Peter the fisherman from Galilee has become the strong leader that they all look up to, and Abigail is happy to follow his guidance into a new life with Stephen, but tragedy lies ahead....
